REPORTING TO: Chief Operating Officer

JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: Set the vision and lead the strategic development, implementation and compliance (legal, regulatory and otherwise) monitoring of the company SHE strategy, programs, policies, processes and initiatives. Lead the development of the Company’s safety maturity from its current state to a world class standard while ensuring the development and implementation of optimal, cost effective, best practice health, wellness and environmental management interventions and practices.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES):

  • Provide oversight of the company’s SHE programs as executed by the operating units.
  • Lead the development of the company’s long term SHE roadmap, vision and strategy towards a world class SHE culture, in collaboration with line management and EXCO.
  • Organize and lead initiatives to identify issues and trends, share best practices, benchmark results and identify, develop and review strategic SHE initiatives that impact all of the operating units.
  • Lead the company’s approach in ensuring that “Home Without Harm, Everyone Everyday” becomes a way of life in everything we do.
  • Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines
  • Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention
  • Monitor compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations
  • Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker’s compensation claims
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
  • Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Management or related field preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • 10 Years SHE experience of which at least 5 years in a senior SHE management position in a large organization.
  • Demonstrated track record in leading and successfully implementing a SHE strategy in a large organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • NOSA 5 Star System, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 systems
  • Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines
  • Ability in producing reports and developing relevant policies
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills
  • Report writing skills
  • Knowledge of Safety, Health and Environmental best practices as well as relevant legislation
  • Managerial skills
  • Strong personal drive for results
  • Ability to influence organization strategy regarding SHE
  • Ability to analyse trends and make recommendations to rectify discrepancies
  • Collaboration skills
